As incredible as U.S. Air Flight 1549 landing safely after ditching in the Hudson River might be it seems curious to me to what degree the media took this and ran with it. We have even become so familiar with the pilot that we refer to him by his nickname! Yes..."Sully" has become an icon without even a soundbyte for us to latch onto.
Might it be that the entire event is, in fact, a metaphor for us all as we hear the engines of the world economy coming to a grinding halt with no assurance that we might all become victims of this catastrophic event? Could it be that all of the hopes and dreams that we are placing with our new president are not simply a pipe dream? "Yeah...the plane is going down" and "Yeah, we need to brace for impact but in the end by the grace of God and a good pilot we may all come out of this alive". Hmmmm...something to think about.

Hmmmm.... how to say this nicely? Well, I'm not sure that I can, so I'll just put it out there: I don't think that the average American (or many Americans on either side of the bell-curve, either, actually) would consider the event of the plane crash and the crashing economy and these two heroes' roles in their outcomes to be analogous. I just don't see the average, let's say PLUMBER for giggles, would compare the two events at all (maybe the men, yes, but not the events). Call me a pessimist...
ReplyDeleteI do think the fact that YOU made this analogy shows your optimism in this future president. Oh, and it maybe also shows that you think too much. :-p
Thanks for the comment...Maureen. It's a good thing I wasn't shooting for "Joe the Plumber" types!
